Construction on R50-billion north coast development gets underway

Construction of a mixed-use development - said to cost R50-billion - has begun on the north coast of Durban.
The development of the 1 000
hectare Sibaya Coastal Precinct will span 15 to 20 years - with a promise of
270 000 jobs during the construction phase.
Tongaat Hulett Development Executive Sithembiso Mthembu says the project will also be beneficial for surrounding communities.
"On local business opportunities, there will be various opportunities for SMME's during construction and post construction. We've identified a number of training courses that will in essence we are going to be rolling out together with Elangeni TVET college in order to prepare people for job opportunities," he said.
Economic Development MEC Sihle Zikalala says the project will stimulate economic growth.
"It will lead to a number of opportunities and other business operations being opened in the center. It's said to create commercial business here - and also will add to residential property along the coast," he said.
