‘Conflicting versions’ of Vryheid crash cause - MEC
Updated | By Tsakane Mhlongo
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport says it has received conflicting versions of the cause of Tuesday morning's bus crash on the R34 near Vryheid in northern KZN.
It is understood that the bus was sideswiped by a heavy-duty truck, resulting in the deaths of 10 people.
The EFF confirmed that bus was transporting supporters who attended a Youth Day rally at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, on Monday.
Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said three women and seven men died while 20 passengers were transported to the hospital.
"Both the drivers are alive, and they have been taken to the hospital.

"We just have to assure that it remains a sensitive matter because we have not even met almost all the families."
However, Duma said survivors have given different versions of what happened.
Some allege that the bus driver attempted to overtake the truck, while others claim the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel.
Duma said they do not want to speculate at this stage.
"And we're not going to say what are the causal effect, up until, we are sure. The team has taken the bus straight to RTI for further investigation."
