Concern over indigenous languages matric pass rate
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) says while it celebrates the incredible achievements of the 2021 matrics, it is concerned about the decline in the percentage pass rate of some indigenous languages.
The teachers' union has been commenting on the quality of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results released on Friday.
The overall pass rate climbed to 76. 4 percent.
Sadtu's Nomusa Cembi believes the country's taken a few steps back in promoting indigenous African languages in schools.
She says more needs to be done to embrace them.
"We have also advocated for the prioritization of indigenous languages so that we can in real measurable times move towards the decolonisation of our system.
"It is our view that this critical element is a key requirement towards us educating the young people of this country about their origins, values and ethics to have a sense of pride in their identity."
