Comrades centenary: Thousands take part in virtual run

Thousands of runners across the country and abroad are hitting the road and their treadmills today for a special edition of the Comrades Marathon.

Comrades Marathon

The ultimate human race is marking its centenary. However due to the pandemic the race is being hosted virtually for a second year running.

Like last year participants are running one of five distances where ever they are and have until 11h59 tonight to finish and clock their times online.

Spokesperson for the Comrades Marathon Association, Delaine Cools, says runners from 56 nations, will be participating in the centenary hope challenge.

"Like last year we had more than 43 000 entries and we had people running in families, alongside spouses, children and even pets and with COVID-19 upon it is that spirit of hope we are asking our runners to run for", she said.

She says some of the biggest names that have graced the marathon over the years are also taking part today.

"We have the reigning champ, Edward Mothibi. Then we also have the likes of Bruce Fordyce, the quadruple green number runners like the guys with the comrades finishes like Louis Massyn and Barry and Barry Holland:, Cools said.
