Completion of Bayhead bypass ‘to help ease congestion’
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Transnet says truck congestion at the Port of Durban should be a thing of the past once the Bayhead bypass road is completed.
They expect to have it open in December.
Bayhead Road was left severely damaged by the April floods, affecting truckers transporting cargo to the port.
Transnet says the bypass road, which is 1.6 kilometres long, is an emergency response to help divert trucks.
The Road Freight Association has welcomed the news.

"Hopefully, they have widened it to allow trucks to pass each other. So that's tremendous news, and it's is not going to be easily destroyed by floods next time around,” says CEO Gavin Kelly.
But Kelly has questioned whether the change will cut the long queues.
"The driver now sits on the truck, waiting for the queue to move and be able to get in. That is not a nice scenario at all where you sit and you have to look for access to ablutions and water and you don't want to lose your way and your place in that queue."
