Coal sector strike 'won't cause power cuts'
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Eskom says a possible strike in the coal mining sector should not affect the country's power supply.
Around 30 thousand miners are expected to down tools after a 48 hour strike notice expired.
The National Union of Mineworkers wants to see the lowest paid workers receiving a 13% increase.
Spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe says power supply will only be affected if the strike continues for more than a month.
''We do have coal stockpiles at all our power stations or the ones that are fuel-fired at least. On average, we have about 30 days worth of coal stockpiles. If the strike goes on for 30 days we should be fine.
''However, if the strike goes beyond that then that's when we would be running into trouble. So generally from our side, we're relatively comfortable that we will be able to [operate],'' he said.
