Clinical findings suggest repeated sexual abuse of Verulam child
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The doctor who assessed the Verulam girl whose stepfather is accused of raping her has told the Durban High Court all clinical findings suggest there was repeated sexual abuse of the child.
The 45-year-old man was arrested in June 2018 after the girl who was 11 at the time, told her neighbour what had been going on.
It's alleged the abuse had been going on for several years.
Doctor Raksha Ramjiawan is the district surgeon at the Thuthuzela Care Centre at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Phoenix.
She told the court on Tuesday she examined the child the same day her stepfather was arrested.

She says the examination revealed evidence the girl was violated over a period of time.
Ramjiawan says when she saw the girl, she was visibly traumatized, scared, withdrawn, and quiet.
She says they had to get a social worker to help the child to speak up about what she had gone through.
