Churches alliance to challenge Commission's probe
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Government has been slammed for wanting to regulate charismatic churches through its probe into the commercialisation of religion.
The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Religious Communities is investigating a number of faith and religious leaders.
At a Pastors’ Imbizo held at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban today, church leaders in the province unveiled their alliance, in a bid to fight aspects of the commission’s probe.
As part of the investigation, the Commission requires churches to submit their financial records.
Pastor Patrick Shezi explains that this is not the role of the CRL.
"There must be enforcement but we don't believe it must be the Commission's responsibility to do so. There are organs of government that are supposed to be doing that but at the same time - as leaders, we know there are many churches who are not compliant.
"Let's be proactive. Don't fight the commission. The commission is not an enemy. Let's assist each other," he said.
