Child Welfare welcomes new Social Assistance Amendment Act
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
A civil society group says social grants can now be expanded to child-headed households, thanks to the Social Assistance Amendment Act.
It was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week.
Julie Todd from Child Welfare in Pietermaritzburg says the Act will provide a legal solution to the country's foster care crisis.
Grants will also be topped-up for those looking after foster children without them having to get a court order.
"As we have such a huge backlog of foster care grant, especially in KZN, many have that would have lapsed without that High Court order that has been constantly extended because of children will be in a more precarious situation without those grants.
