Calls for probe into Mandela Marathon funds

The DA in the province says it will table questions to the Department of Co-operative Governance soon over what it believes is the misuse of funds for the Mandela Day Marathon.

The opposition party alleges the Umgungundlovu District Municipality diverted money meant for water waste projects to the event held at the weekend.

The DA says R4-million of a R10-million conditional grant by the KZN Treasury was diverted. The party's Dean Macpherson says the district's rural community has been been affected.

"There are two issues - there's the issue of compromising service delivery and good governance which the municipality is fully aware of. In this instance they've robbed the rural residents of the much needed project for a marathon.

"On the other hand, we do not want to see the marathon not happen," he said.

Umgungundlovu's municipal manager, S'bu Khuzwayo says they're aware of the matter.

"Yes, there is such a matter but I cannot comment on it because it is sub judice - it is under consideration by council," he said.
