Calls for beefing up of security at KZN schools

Teachers' union, Natu has accused the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education of not being proactive in dealing with the recent violence in the province's schools - which has disrupted teaching and learning.

This is after this week a grade 12 learner shot another in class before turning the gun onto himself at Qantayi High School in Port Dunford.

Last week, a pupil stabbed and killed a classmate at Qakwini High School near Mtubatuba.

The union's Allen Thompson says the department should install metal detectors at schools.

"We've even proposed that for every 200 learners, there must be one fully armed security guard who will be able able to take control of the school environment," he said.

The department's Muzi Mahlambi says they welcome Natu's call and are open to meeting with the union to discuss how their limited resource can be better used to address the issue.

"Safety in our schools is very important to us. We wish we had all the money in the world to provide adequate security. We are calling upon parents, learners, community members to work with us on this issue," he said.
