Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
A local agricultural union is calling on government to declare Foot and Mouth Disease a disaster in KZN.
It says farmers and livestock owners continue to suffer as officials grapple to contain the spread.
There are currently 149 active outbreaks across the province.
The KZN Agricultural Union says government's failure to curb the disease will result in the closure of many businesses.
The Union's Angus Williamson says meat producers are facing financial frustration over the outbreak. He adds that the financial impacts that it is having on the producers is enormous.

"I think people don't actually realize how severe foot and mouth is in the KZN area. Many producers who cannot sell livestock have not had any form of income, both the communal as well as the commercial sector. We need divine intervention at the moment."
"There are several farmers that I know of who have canceled financial policies. They are at basically at the end of their tether," he ended.
