Burundi war: urgent SA Government intervention sought

A Burundian national living in Durban says nationals from Rwanda living in Burundi have resorted to hiding in bushes and they fear for their lives.

Amade Kanakimana fled the war-ridden country in 2004 when his father, a Burundian, was killed.

He says his mother who is a Rwandian and his younger brother are part of those now living in the bush.

"That president of Burundi is stealing Rwandan people. My mother told me that now she's staying in the bush and is not coming out of it.

"In that country, we got used to bullets from a very young age. We didn't even go to school because of the bullets. I'm worried about my mother and my younger brother's education," he said.

Hundreds of people have been killed in Burundi and more than 200-000 others have fled as refugees to neighbouring countries since April when President Pierre Nkurunziza said he would run for a third term in office.

He went on to win a July election that was boycotted by opposition parties.
