The power utility says their system is under severe constraints and will implement rotational cuts until 11pm on Sunday night.

Eskom was meant to suspend loadshedding on Friday night but said they had no choice but to continue for an extended period.

Eskom’s Sikonathi Mantshantsha says over the past 24-hours further breakdowns occurred at three power stations, Kriel, Madupi and Kendal, resulting in generation units being taken offline for various faults.

He says emerging risks at various other power stations have also contributed to the constraints.

“While Eskom used the loadshedding of the past two days to replenish the emergency generation reserves, we have had to utilize the emergency reserves to supplement supply. This period of loadshedding will be used to replenish the emergency generation reserves,”  Mantshantsha said.

There is currently 7 071MW on planned maintenance, while another 11 780MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns and delays.
