Basic Education warns schools preparing to reopen prematurely
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Basic Education Department has warned schools about re-opening prematurely.
Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says action - including arrests - will be taken against principals who are found to be putting lives at risk.
"We have received reports from parents and teachers in different parts of the country who are indicating that they have been asked to start preparing for the return of learners back to school before the end of May. That is inappropriate," says Mhlanga.
He added: "The minister has not given a directive. She indicated in the media briefing that the final word will come from her after her presentation at the Nationa Command Council, and that is taking place next week."
Last week, Minister Angie Motshekga said 1 June had been set down as a proposed date to begin a phased-in return of learners to school, with the first group of learning retunring being be Grade 12s and Grade 7s.
She said teachers would be expected to report for duty two weeks before that to prepare.
Motshega said the time before that would be used to get schools ready for teaching and learning - including deep-cleaning and procuring masks and other personal protective equipment.
