Basic Education ‘ready’ for school reopening, awaiting green light from Ramaphosa

The Department of Basic Education says it is ready for schools to reopen on Monday, but will wait for President Cyril Ramaphosa to give them the green light.
Minister Angie Motshekga says the department is ready to go back to school from Monday.
"As a sector, we have held countless consultative sessions to deliberate on the reopening of schools.
“Depending on confirmation by the president tomorrow after Cabinet, as a sector there is agreement across the board that we are ready for the reopening of schools on Monday, 26 July.
“School management teams and support staff have already gone back to work, as from Thursday, to prepare for the return of learners and teachers on Monday,” she adds.
Ramaphosa is expected to brief the country on Sunday night on the possible easing of the country’s regulations.
The country has been under amended lockdown level four in light of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In term two, schools were closed a week earlier as a result of soaring number of cases.
However, numbers have since come down over the past week with experts suggesting that the country may be past the peak of the third wave.
The department undertook to vaccinate its staff during the school holidays to minimise disruptions in the schooling year.
Approximately 517 000 out of the 582 000 staff in the basic education sector have been vaccinated.
“When we formally closed the vaccination programme, we recorded 517 000 people who received vaccines which is an 89% success rate,” says Motshekga.
