Appeal for caution at nature reserves
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
Emergency officials have appealed to those visiting the province’s nature reserves to exercise caution, especially if taking children along.
Two teenage boys were badly hurt after plunging several metres down Karkloof Waterfall, in the KZN Midlands, in separate incidents recently. A 14-year-old was airlifted to hospital when he plummeted some 50-metres on Wednesday.
Netcare 911 medics responded to both emergencies. Spokesperson Shawn Herbst says people need to be aware of their surroundings.
"Some weather conditions do bring about a greater risk of algae and this will make any surface around water more slippery than usual. Also do not wonder to close the edge of the rocks because you never when you may lose your balance or when a strong wind may blow", he said.
Both boys are still recovering in hospital. Herbst adds that parents need to know where their children are at all times.
"In a lot of cases we have seen the parents are not even aware that their children are going through to the waterfall and not think what could happen if there was an emergency", Herbst said.
