Anti-hijacking operation launched in KZN
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu has launched a crime fighting operation to tackle a syndicate that allegedly hijacks vehicles and moves them into Mozambique.
Mchunu established the team of provincial government officials, police and local leaders after meeting with communities in the Umkhanyakude District - the worst affected region.
The Office of the Premier's Thami Ngwenya says authorities will also increase their surveillance operations.
"There's a lot of crime in the Umkhanyakude area, particularly with regards to car theft, stokvels, out in the parking and people even walk into other people's homes," he said.
Meanwhile, the South African Police Service says they are pleased with the more than 500 officers who have been re-enlisted into the force.
