This brings the number of people who have died in the last 24 hours after being struck on KwaZulu-Natal roads to four.

In the latest accident - paramedics say the 30-year-old man was found lying on the side of the M19 - with his vehicle several metres away.

Earlier this afternoon a man in his sixties also died after a car struck him on the N3 between the M13 and the Pavilion shopping centre in Durban.

This morning a man was killed by a car while crossing in Umgeni Park. Today's accidents follow two similar ones yesterday in which an eight-year-old girl was killed while walking home from school in Port Sheptone.

A six-year-old child is recovering from the serious injuries she sustained after she was knocked over on a road in Isipingo late yesterday afternoon.

eThekwini Metro police's Eugene Msomi is advising pedestrians to make use of pedestrian bridges and crossings where possible.

''If you are on a busy road just be aware that accidents do happen, which means that motorists and drivers who often make mistakes should be careful. You could be on the pavement and still get hit by a vehicle if it loses control. It is very important to be extra vigilant,'' he said.
