The ANC is set to hold a special National Executive Committee meeting on the Phala Phala matter on Wednesday evening.

This follows last week’s Constitutional Court ruling that MPs acted unlawfully when they voted against adopting a panel report into the scandal.

Parliament vote challenged

In 2022, the Section 89 panel recommended Parliament institute an impeachment inquiry against President Cyril Ramaphosa.

It followed the theft of foreign currency from his Limpopo farm in 2020.

Parliament later voted against adopting the panel’s findings.

Earlier this week, Ramaphosa said that despite calls by some, he will not be resigning.

He said he would take the independent panel’s report on legal review.

The ANC says officials will meet in Cape Town at 18:00.

Political storm continues

Opposition political parties have expressed disapproval of Ramaphosa’s decision to pursue a legal review of the report.

The EFF says his decision to challenge the report is a deliberate attempt to avoid accountability.

It says the president is exhausting every legal avenue possible to evade a potential impeachment process.

DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has called for the review application to be fast-tracked to avoid delays in holding the president accountable.

Meanwhile, the IFP says Parliament is still duty-bound to implement the Constitutional Court ruling and proceed with an impeachment committee while the review application unfolds.

ActionSA says the matter strikes at the heart of public trust in the Presidency and the integrity of constitutional governance.

“We are very pleased that he has taken the gung-ho route not to resign because it would have been cowardly of him to do so.”
