Analyst fears fees-related violence may lead to deaths

A KZN violence monitor believes the province could find itself burying another student - should the level of violence in the Fees Must Fall protests continue.
23-year-old Michael Makhabane from Ficksburg in the Free State, was killed 16-years-ago - after being shot in the chest during a protest at the University of Durban-Westville (now UKZN's Westville campus.)

That protest in 2000 was also against financial issues - with more than 500 students deregistered for not paying fees.
Mary de Haas says the current situation is complex, as many students claim outsiders are torching property.
She wants to see better training when it comes to crowd control:
This is a potential recipe for disaster, because the police will say one thing. And we have seen students engaging in very violent behaviour. But there's no doubt in my mind that there is some substance in what the students are saying about the police heavy-handedness," she said.
De Haas feels the violence being portrayed by some students is result of them having grown up in violent societies.
