Accused in Ahmed Timol's murder to stand trial
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The family of anti-apartheid activist, Ahmed Timol have welcomed Judge Seun Moshidi’s judgement - dismissing an application by Joao Rodrigues for a permanent stay of prosecution.
Rodrigues has been implicated in the murder of Timol in 1971.
The judgement was passed down in the South Gauteng High Court today.
Timol's Nephew Imtiaaz Cajee says the case against Rodrigues should begin soon.
"We have always known that the truth will be on our side. Today's judgement is not just a victory for Ahmed Timol - but for all activists who died in police detention."
Cajee says since the birth of democracy, there has been no progress on investigations.
"It's a clear message that the full bench has sent today - that apartheid-era perpetrators can no longer use the excuse of time delay or Rodrigues talking about his age. That will simply not hold," Cajee said.
