47 firearms seized in KZN operations

KwaZulu-Natal police have seized 47 illegal firearms and arrested 46 suspects during festive season operations across the province.
More than 1000 rounds of ammunition were also recovered over the past week.
The Community Safety and Liaison Department says the successful recovery of the weapons is helping tackle crime in the region.
MEC Willies Mchunu says police and the provincial government have a tight security plan to deal with crime ahead of and beyond the festive season.
Mchunu said in a statement that illegal firearms continue to be the key driver of criminal activity in the province.
"We, therefore, applaud the police for removing these weapons from our communities which are used to commit heinous crimes against innocent people.
"We urge the police to leave no stone unturned to remove these illegal firearms and urge them to continue these operations so the perpetrators are brought to justice and the province is free of these weapons of anarchy,” said Mchunu.
