Swift police action has resulted in the arrest of three suspects, moments after three occupants of a bakkie were sprayed with bullets in the Upper Tugela area this morning.
Police say the three men, among them a police officer based in Gauteng, allegedly drove up to the bakkie and opened fire just before 8am this morning, killing two of the men and seriously wounding a woman.
The police's Jay Naicker says the two men killed may have been taxi owners.
"The three men, aged between 23 and 27, were immediately arrested. The vehicle used in the crime as well as three firearms and ammunition were also seized.
"The firearms consisted of an R5 rifle and two 9mm pistols. All three firearms have their serial numbers filed off. The deceased have not yet been officially identified.
"The three suspects face charges of murder, attempted murder as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition," he said.
