3 suspected hijackers shot dead in Durban
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Three suspected hijackers have been shot dead following a car chase through the south of Durban last night.
Spokesperson Thulani Zwane says the suspects tried to make an escape along South Coast Road.
He says the occupants of the silver Mercedes opened fire on police and tried to run them off the road.
Zwane says they then crashed the car trying to enter the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi.
"The suspects alighted the vehicle and started to shoot towards the members. The members retaliated and three suspects were shot and killed.
''Three unlicensed firearms were also recovered. A case of hijacking as well as three counts of inquest have been opened by the police," he said.
No officers were hurt in the shooting.
