3 killed, 9 hurt in horrific Howick crash
Updated | By Benedict Ngwenya
Nine other people were hurt as they travelled on the P134 District Road in Howick last night.
It is believed the driver of their bakkie overtook a truck when an unidentified object struck the passengers who had been sitting on the back of the vehicle. Paramedics say the bakkie had no canopy.
ER24's Russel Meiring says the women died on scene.
"Paramedics along with Provincial Services responded to the scene and on their arrival found a bakkie and large truck both on the side of the road. Occupants who had been sitting on the back of the bakkie were found near the vehicle.
"On assessment we found that three women had sustained multiple fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing more could be done for the patients and they were declared dead on scene," he said.
Earlier this week, on the M4 in Congella, a mechanical failure resulted in a sideshaft of a bakkie coming loose on the highway and colliding with the side of a taxi where a passenger was seating, killing an elderly woman.
