2017 Year in Review: Sardines remain elusive along KZN coast

The annual sardine run remained as elusive as ever in 2017, despite some signs that we could be in for a bumper season this year.

Some nets were pulled from the water on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast in June, sparking excitement that 2017 could be the year the sardines make their long awaited arrival.

Fishermen, netters and the general public went into a frenzy on the upper south coast on the 22nd June, with the fish being netted at Isipingo, Amanzimtoti and Winklespruit.

The KZN Sharks Board says around 400 baskets were netted at Amanzimtoti.

Strong south westerly winds put the brakes on what people hoped would be the beginning of a few days of decent sardine action.

Facebook users commenting on the story said they had not seen a decent sardine run in years. Others tagged their friends, hoping 2017 would be the year things improved.

Sardines were netted near St Michaels, Ramsgate and Margate again several days later.

Shark safety gear was removed from the sea in anticipation of increased activity in the area.

Unfortunately though, 2017 will be remembered as another year the sardine run did not live up to expectations.
