The men appeared briefly in the packed courtroom under heavy police guard.

Groen told the court that the men face three counts of murder and one of attempted murder and public violence.

Advocate Jimmy Howse for the twelve suspects objected to the media taking pictures of the accused in court saying that  he would give his reasons next week on Wednesday when the men apply for bail.

Howse is being instructed by attorneys including Bafana Mhlongo who represents the KZN Taxi Alliance
