Durban rains: Plumbing, electrical services inundated with calls
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
Durban plumbers and electricians have been kept busy attending to numerous callouts after floods wreaked havoc around the city.
Owner of AMS Plumbing, Mary Santana says complaints range from blocked drains to broken sewers.
She says they've experienced some difficulty - as at times they've had to wait for the water to subside in order to locate the blockage.
"We don't usually take on big work for a Monday morning, and this Monday it was like chaos and it didn't stop there. It came down on Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon," she said.
Ryan Taylor of Durban Plumbing and Electrical says the calls started coming in on Monday afternoon and have not stopped.
"We received 40 phone calls with people's houses and businesses being flooded, storm water drains blocked - it was pretty busy. This also carried on until last night as well," he said.
In Umhlanga, one resident says her family was forced to leave their home after it became flooded.
"What happened is we started to hear large cracking noises and our neighbouring wall started to collapse and then it was a torrent - it was literally a river rammed through the front of our property.
"It affected about six homes in our road where the neighbouring walls collapsed because of the pressure," she said.
