Updated | By Poelano Malema
Somizi Mhlongo has set the record straight about his sexuality, explaining that while society has boxed him into being gay, he identifies as pansexual and called out people who judge sexuality by mannerism.
South African media personality Somizi Mhlongo has opened up about his sexuality, explaining that society has often boxed him as a gay man, but thats not how he identifies.
Mhlongo joined L-Tido on his podcast where he revealed that he is pansexual.
“First of all, I never said I don't like girls. Two, the world put me in a box and said 'you are gay',” he explained, adding that as people grow older and become wiser, they can realise that there are different sexualities.
Mhlongo explained that being pansexual means he can be attracted to someone regardless of their sexuality or gender.
“I am attracted to you not based on your sexuality, or your gender, or anything. If our souls and everything else, our energies connect, and I’m attracted to you, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a guy or a girl or a trans or whatever. I am a pansexual,” he said.
He also described himself as sapiosexual saying, “I can only be attracted to you if you are smart. I don’t date domkops."
Mhlongo also spoke about society’s tendency to judge people’s sexuality based on their appearance and mannerisms.
He added that he "hates it when, especially members of our community, and women," think being gay is a mannerism or an act.
He said the stereotype that if a man is too clean, flamboyant, soft, he is perceived as gay, while someone who is "rough and looks angry" or is masculine is straight should end.
"Sexuality is who you are. You are born that way," he explained.
"Gay doesn't have a face. Gay doesn't have a look."
He said if an opportunity came and he found a woman he liked, he would go into a relationship with her, however, currently, he has multiple partners.
