Pearl Thusi reportedly in R15 million tax battle with SARS
Pearl Thusi has become the latest South African celebrity to reportedly face a tax battle with SARS.
South African media personality Pearl Thusi is reportedly engaged in a nearly R15 million tax dispute with the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Reports over the weekend indicated that SARS had issued summonses, including a final demand, over an alleged tax debt against Thusi, whose real name is Sithembile Xola Thusi.
According to the Sunday Times, the amount reportedly includes R9.8 million in outstanding tax, a further R5.2 million in interest and R20,000 in administrative penalties. Thusi was reportedly given 10 days to settle the amount or pursue other legal remedies.
However, according to Briefly, Thusi has disputed the amount that SARS says she owes. While she reportedly acknowledges that she owes SARS money, she disputes the nearly R15 million figure.
Thusi is not the only South African celebrity to have found themselves in a tax battle with SARS.
Earlier this year, Somizi Mhlongo was reportedly hit with a R20-million SARS bill.
In 2023, SARS reportedly ordered Sophie Ndaba’s company, Sophla Trading, to settle more than R23 million of outstanding tax debt.
In 2020, DJ Black Coffee negotiated a R40 million SARS tax assessment down to R8 million.
Other celebrities who have previously had tax-related dealings with SARS include Bonang Matheba and Zonke Dikana.
