Celebrities remember "extraordinary" Diane Keaton
Updated | By Entertainment Reporter
Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn led tributes to the 'First Wives Club' actress.
Tributes are pouring in for Diane Keaton after the Oscar-winning actress died at 79.
Her famous friends and former colleagues have remembered her as "brilliant, beautiful, [and] extraordinary"
Keaton passed away on Saturday, October 11. Her cause of death has not yet been revealed, but several reports suggest that her health deteriorated "suddenly" in recent months.
"It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit. In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening," a close friend told People magazine.
Songwriter Carole Bayer Sager told the publication that she saw the actress "two or three weeks ago", noting that she looked "very thin".
The 'Book Club' star's final Instagram post was shared in April 2025.
Lifestyle brand Hudson Grace, which worked with Keaton on a homeware collection, tagged the star and her golden retriever, Reggie, in a post celebrating National Pet Day.
Keaton appeared in movies such as 'Something's Gotta Give', 'Father of the Bride', 'Hanging Up', 'Marvin's Room', 'Annie Hall', 'Shoot the Moon' and 'The Godfather'.
She starred alongside A-list stars including Keanu Reeves, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Jack Nicholson, Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas and Meg Ryan.
One of Keaton's most memorable roles was as Annie MacDuggan-Paradis in The First Wives Club. The 1996 film was a huge success and became one of the highest-grossing films at the box office that year.
Her co-stars in the film were Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler.

Both Hawn and Midler paid tribute to Keaton on social media.
"Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you. You’ve left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination," Hawn wrote.
"How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to 'shut up' honey. There was, and will be, no one like you... My heart goes out to your beautiful children, Dex and Duke."Midler said she is "unbearably sad" about the news.
"She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!"
Here's a look at what other Keaton's other co-stars had to say:
Leonardo DiCaprio (Marvin's Room, 1996)
"Diane Keaton was one of a kind. Brilliant, funny, and unapologetically herself. A legend, an icon, and a truly kind human being. I had the honor of working with her at 18. She will be deeply missed.”
Jane Fonda (Book Club, 2018)
"It’s hard to believe...or accept…that Diane has passed. She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!"
Michael Douglas (And So It Goes, 2014)
"RIP to my friend Diane Keaton. A heartbreaking loss of one of the greatest icons in our industry. I have so many fond memories of working with Diane on our film And So It Goes nearly twelve years ago. Sending my deepest condolences to the Keaton family during this difficult time."

Cynthia Nixon (5 Flights Up, 2014)
"When I was a kid, Diane Keaton was my absolute idol. I loved her acting. I loved her vibe. I loved her everything. Starting with when I was 12, I tried to dress like her. I wore my hair long. I sported men’s hats and vests and (even though my eyes were fine) I wore bookish glasses because I thought they made me look more like her. A little more than a decade ago I got to be in a movie called 'Five Flights Up' with her and it was like a dream come true. I was very shy around her, but I think she liked me and that meant everything to me."
Mandy Moore (Because I Said So, 2007)
"They say don’t meet your heros but I got to work with one of mine and even call her “mom” for a few months. An honor of a lifetime. What an incandescent human Di is and was. I am so sad she’s gone for all the reasons but also because it felt like she’d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c’mon)!!! One of the very best to ever do it. All my love to her children and loved ones."
Jennifer Tilly (Sister Mary Explains It All, 1979)
"Diane was so warm and wonderful, and had a great sense of humor. I loved working with her. I still have the beautifully engraved bible that she gave me as a wrap present. She was a truly unique individual. Such a loss."
