Beyoncé celebrated her 45th birthday on September 4, but it wasn’t just the birthday celebrations that got people talking. The Grammy-winning superstar also announced a rather pricey addition to her merchandise collection - an empty wooden box that costs almost US$1,000.

According to Rolling Stone, the Bey Keeper Collector's Box does not include any vinyl records from her catalog and it was released in a limited quantity of 500 for the 20th anniversary of her album 'B'Day'. The singer also released an extended release of the album. It features remixed and remastered recordings and previously unreleased music.

The Bey Keeper Collectors Box, priced at US$948.01, works out to roughly R15, 120.69 and, unsurprisingly, the price tag has left many people on the internet scratching their heads.

"That's just "a wooden box with a strap", but ALL 500 boxes will be sold out, that's the real funny thing about it! You go Beyoncé keep on raking in that dough!" one user said.

Another said: "What’s in it $948 that’s rent for me."

"SHEIN gone have one just like it in 24 hours."

So what exactly do you get for your R15,120?

Well, the box is, quite literally, a box. According to its description, it is designed to house and display Beyoncé’s vinyl collection.

Measuring 18 by 14 inches (45 by 35cm), the collector’s box is lined with deep green velvet and features custom-engraved details. It also comes with a faux gator-skin leather carrying strap with gold hardware and custom-engraved details.

People online have questioned whether an empty box is worth the price tag, even with Beyoncé's name. While there’s no denying that Beyoncé has a fiercely loyal fan base, R15,000 is still a lot of money to spend on an "empty wooden crate".

For some fans, it seems the answer is a simple: thanks, but no thanks.
