Political parties need to form coalitions soon

The inter-ministerial committee on local government elections says municipal managers have 14 days from the date of the declaration of the election results to call the first council meeting where a speaker and mayor will be elected.

A coalition government will be a reality in hotly-contested metro's such as Tshwane and Johannesburg where political parties failed to get an outright majority.


The committee has called on political parties to seriously consider coalitions to avoid hung councils.


The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will ensure the implementation of the integrated councillor induction programme.


Cooperative Governance minister, Des Van Rooyen is optimistic that political parties will consider forming coalitions as to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.


"If there is no agreement within the provided period the constitution provides both the provincial and the national sphere of government and authority to intervene in a situation where municipalities are not functional as a result of them being able to reach an agreement or maybe taking appropriate decisions," he said.
