IEC calls on employers to let workers vote on Wednesday
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa is urging all employers to allow their staff who have to work on Wednesday some time off to cast their ballot.
The IEC's Kate Bapela says people must vote in the areas they're registered.
Bapela says although there is no law stating outright that it's illegal to prevent employees from voting by not giving them time off, she hopes employers will respect electoral democracy and the Constitutional right to vote.
"A politically stable country is worthwhile for business so the least any employers can do is to create an environment were by politically, people are able to make their choices.
"When the country is politically and economically stable, our economy is able to do much better so I am hoping that employers will support electoral democracy," she said.
