Public Protector's Office marks 20 years of service

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete says Advocate Thuli Madonsela has done an exceptional job as Public Protector.

Mbete had been speaking yesterday at the 20-year commemoration of the Office of the Public Protector.

She says the noise generated in the public is necessary as it deepens a vibrant democracy.

"The noise in the public domain can be very confusing but the truth of the matter is sometimes we need those bumps, knocks and noise because it keeps us alert, it makes us think. Therefore, it even deepens the quality of the relationships in what we do in the service of our people," she said.

Madonsela's seven-year term of office comes to an end in October.

Meanwhile, Members of Parliament will vote on the nomination of the final candidate for the Public Protector post - Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

Parliament's Ad Hoc Committee - tasked with selecting Madonsela's successor - elected Mkhwebane as their ideal nominee.

The State Security analyst beat five hopefuls whose candidature was deliberated-on by the committee.
