President Zuma says they will cut wasteful expenditure

President Jacob Zuma says public office bearers will have to tighten their belts further to cut down on wasteful expenditure.

 He made the comment during his State of the Nation Address in Parliament last night.


"Overseas trips will be curtailed and those requesting permission will have to motivate it strongly. The size of delegations will be greatly reduced and the budget vote dinners after the delivery of the budget speeches will no longer take place," he said. 


Meanwhile, workers' federation Cosatu has thrown its weight behind Zuma's speech.  


Cosatu released a statement saying the president highlighted many important steps towards lifting the country out of its economic crisis.

The federation says it will engage further with various issues it feels were not mentioned when government's action plans are spelt out in the main budget speech.  


Cosatu welcomed Zuma's commitment and acceptance of the need for economic transformation as the only way to address unemployment, poverty and inequality.
