Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
KZN police are monitoring the area outside the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Pietermaritzburg campus after about 50 people blocked off a road there last night.
The road was blocked with burning tyres and protestors, thought to be students, allegedly stoned passing cars on New England Road and Alan Paton Avenue.
Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala has urged witnesses to come forward.

"They also threw stones at passing vehicles but no one came forward to report that matter. We are calling upon those whose cars were damaged to come and open a case. No arrests have been made and police are monitoring the area," she said.
Last week, firefighters battled a blaze that engulfed a building on the campus. Although the cause is not yet known at this stage - a case of arson is being investigated.
