PICS: Favourite Olympic moments

South Africa bags it's first gold medal at the Rio Olympics, long-standing champion Usain Bolt scoops his third successive Olympic gold in the 100m, and the Games' third marriage proposal are some of the moments that have made international headlines and created viral images.

It's day 11 of the event, and here's a selection of the best moments from the tournament in pictures.

Usain Bolt makes history

Jamaican track athlete, Usain Bolt - made history after walking away with a third gold medal in the 100-metre men's race ( others include those won during the Beiijng Olympics in 2008 and in London in 2012). He's been dubbed the most decorated sprinter of all time by the Olympics official site, having amassed a total of 11 world gold medals in his career. According to Time Magazine, the image was taken by Sydney-based photographer Cameron Spencer, during the 100m semi-final. It has since gone viral and become the subject of countless of internet memes.

Wayde van Niekerk becomes SA's hero

Van Niekerk made headlines after breaking the 400-metre world record held since 1999. Running in the unfavourable lane eight, the 24-year-old sped to the finish to earn South Africa's first gold medal. The athlete had a few members of his family at the stadium to witness his record-breaking run. Prior to his Olympic appearance, he made athletics history in March when he became the first to break the 10-sec for 100-metres, 20-sec for 200m and 44-sec for 400m. He's also received a 'thumbs up' from the previous record holder, Michael Johnson and champion, Usain Bolt.

Shaunae Miller 'dives' for gold

This image has sparked controversy on social media on whether Bahamian runner, Shaunae Miller's finish was indeed worth a gold medal. The 22-year-old dove across the finish line in an attempt to break a fall during the women's 400-metre final. It's reported she also threw herself across the finish to win in 49.44sec at the World Championships in Beijing last year. Your thoughts?

A three-way silver

Durban golden boy, Chad Le Clos; 23-time gold medalist Michael Phelps and European champion, Laszlo Cseh all finished the race in 51.14 seconds - sharing the silver medal for the 100-metre butterfly final. In a repeat of history, Phelps reclaimed gold at the men’s 200m butterfly whilst competing alongside rival le Clos who previously held the title since the London Olympics in 2012. During a live interview on the Today Show, he announced his retirement from the Games.

Another Olympic proposal

After Chinese diver He Zi stepped down from the podium for grabbing silver in the women's 3m springboard, Olympic medallist Qin Kai got down on one knee to propose. As the debate on public proposals continues, it's the third proposal to date. "He said a lot of things, made a lot of promises, but I think the thing that touched me the most is I think this is the guy I can trust for the rest of my life." she said.
