Oscar Pistorius could serve longer sentence: legal expert
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
A legal expert feels Oscar Pistorius could land up spending more than six years behind bars.
Mannie Witz has been commenting after the National Prosecuting Authority indicated it would appeal the sentence handed down in the North Gauteng High Court.
Pistorius was re-sentenced after his culpable homicide conviction was converted to one of murder on appeal.
Pistorius claimed he mistook his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot her in 2013.
Witz feels the case is arguable.
"Gerrie Nel is taking this case - as he does with all his cases - very seriously. He's considered it - he's either taken advice from colleagues or looked at the record of the judge carefully.
"He will come back to what the minimum sentence for a first offender - 15 years minimum and 20 years maximum. If they are substantial and compelling which the judge has already found and they have confirmed that they are. They will utilize their discretion as judges," he said.
