The 20-year-old was yesterday handed a 5-year sentence which was wholly suspended by the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court.

The NPA's Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says the 20-year-old told the court that she had no means of supporting the baby.

"She further elaborated that she had decided to sell the child when her boyfriend stopped paying child support after finding out the child is not his.

"She placed the advert is September last year, selling the 19-month-old for R5000. She received a response from a woman three days later. The woman told her that she wanted to buy the baby and they met at a fast food outlet," she said.

Police staged an undercover operation that lead to the woman's arrest.
