N2 cleared after violent protests
eThekwini Municipality says the violent protests over the demolition of illegal shacks in Durban are deeply concerning - but that the situation is currently under control.
The protest by residents of an informal settlement near Cator Manor began at the weekend - and saw the N2 highway between Edwin Swales and Spaghetti Junction being blocked off yesterday - bringing traffic to a halt.
The action on the highway continued today with about 50 protesters again barricading the road with burning tyres earlier.
It is understood the demonstrators are unhappy after the eThekwini's City Land Invasion Unit took down illegal dwellings in the area yesterday.
The Metro Police's Steve Middleton says it took them some time to clear the road.
"The road was obstructed and they started the process the same as yesterday. So what we do is we dispatch our special response teams, that then clear the road."
