More police deployed, surveillance for Durban hostels
The Community Safety MEC says they are working closely with Durban's Metro Police and the SAPS to fast-track the installation surveillance cameras at the Glebelands and KwaMashu hostels.
Willies Mchunu was speaking at the Kings Park Stadium where provincial officials welcomed additional police officers to be deployed to the crime-ridden hostels until the elections are over.
He says they are worried about the safety of residents at the hostels.
"We have been informed by metro that further five cameras will be installed at Glebelands. The parameter fencing is now 75% complete according to Metro. Some tenants, probably 11 380, have now been registered," he said.
Speaking at the same briefing, the provincial police commissioner agreed that more needs to be done to ensure the safety of the tenant living at Glebelands and KwaMashu hostels.
She says the majority of the officers deployed are from Gauteng.
"There has been a unique need in KZN hence the members from Gauteng have been deployed to come and work with us here in KwaZulu-Natal.
"Working with the communities, the leadership of the hostel, we shall be able to make a difference,"she said.
