KZN taxi drivers warned about reckless driving
The Chairperson of Santaco in KwaZulu-Natal says they're already dealing with taxi drivers who're putting the lives of their passengers at risk.
According to the council, those found guilty of driving recklessly could face a disciplinary hearing, a fine or even suspension from driving their vehicles for up to six months.
Boy Zondi says they've sent out a team of 80 people around the province to monitor roads and taxi ranks and to report any reckless drivers.
He says they are also appealing to private taxi owners.
"As owners we are also telling them they need to make sure that the vehicles that are used by taxi drivers are roadworthy at all times. So that is the onus of the owners. We are trying by all means to make sure that we bring down the number of accidents that are caused by taxis on our roads in KZN," he said.
The union's president, Phillip Taaibosch says taxi drivers should be prepared for harsh sentences if they endanger the lives of commuters and other road users.
