A KwaMaphumulo mother whose two-week-old baby was kidnapped in central Durban last week says the last couple of days have been an absolute nightmare.

Bonisiwe Ngubane says a woman who regularly visited her at the Mahatma Ghandi Hospital after she gave birth offered to take her and her new-born home when they were discharged.

Ngubane says the woman asked her to go buy airtime and offered to hold her baby while she went to the shop.

She says when she returned the woman had disappeared with her daughter.

"I screamed for help with hands on my head. I decided that crying will not help me so I went straight to the police station to get help."

"Some nights are worse than others, it's like I'm losing my mind, I can't even sleep at night. I cry and can't even eat when I think of my baby girl. I have hope because police have assured me they are looking day and night for my daughter," she said.

Police are still trying to track down the suspect.

"The suspect took the baby's immunisation card and some clothing. The mother noticed that her cellphone was also taken. Police officials are still searching for both the suspect and the baby. Durban FCS Unit is appealing to members of the community to assist in the investigation of this child abduction case," she said.
