Management says its ability to host the Deputy Minister of Higher Education is testament to the progress being made.

Principal Nkosinathi Mchunu says student protests over the last two years have put the institution under pressure but they're doing their best to resolve outstanding issues.

''It is a great honour for us as eThekwini Tvet College to host such an event knowing that our college has been under tremendous pressure with a number of challenges but we are now coming to a stage where we are becoming stable,'' he said.

Deputy Minister Mduduzi Manana visited the training centre in Sydney Road in Durban yesterday as part of activations for the department's HIV/AIDS programme.

He said by destroying university or college buildings, students are actually destroying their own futures.

''We want to say to them that despite the hardships and challenges, they should not resort to burning buildings, to engaging in violent protests.

''They should rather be able to negotiate and to raise their views very sharply with their management council and with us as government,'' he said.
