Divers to hold underwater protest for sharks on south coast
For the first time in South Africa, the biggest underwater protest will take place tomorrow at Scottburgh and Shelly Beach on the South Coast.
The protest will see scuba divers dive to depths of between 10 to 20 metres holding banners for a number of minutes to raise awareness about the plight of sharks.
Silence of the Sharks Ambassador Olivia "OJ" Symcox says the campaign is about giving a voice to the voiceless sea creatures.
''70 to 100 million sharks are killed every year worldwide - obviously an unsustainable rate - and it's going to in turn have an impact on us and our oceans and our environment.
''The ocean is the earth's life support system. When you remove the apex predator , in this instance sharks, it has a ripple effect all the way down the food chain,'' she said.
The event will also commemorate World Oceans Day, which takes place on Wednesday.
