Former senior SA Revenue Service officials Ivan Pillay and Johann van Loggerenberg as well Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan need South Africa's support.

That's the view of retired Constitutional Court judge Johann Kriegler.

He joined civil society outside the Hawks' Pretoria headquarters in solidarity with the men yesterday.

The organisations include the Helen Suzman Foundation, Freedom Under Law and Corruption Watch and they believe the allegations have no merit.

The retired judge Kriegler says these men have been ruined financially as well as emotionally and therefore need all possible support.

"A man like Ivan Pillay who has given his life to the cause, is being victimised by pity little people for motives that I believe are based in the extreme its a disgrace that we have come to this in our fair land the new South Africa," he said.

Yesterday, the lawyer representing Pillay and Loggerenberg said the allegations brought against his clients are baseless.

Robert Levine addressed the media after the meeting between his clients and Hawks officials concluded.

"Our clients will be following due process. They consider the allegations baseless and will be addressing the due process in accordance with their rights," he said.

Meanwhile, Van Loggerenberg thanked South Africans for their support.

"It's wonderful and thank you very much. Not just for the people who came, but also the people who continuously send us messages. Wonderful. I've received thousands of messages since yesterday, so thank you very much," he said.

The Hawks are investigating the so-called SARS rogue unit.

Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma says he has full confidence in Gordhan but does not have the power to stop investigations into any individuals.
