music right now

One of the most exciting things about music is how it is always evolving.

With the rise of the internet there are always avenues for artists to drop music and make an impact.

With that said, women seem to be taking the lead in transforming the way we listen to music.

Across genres they are stretching the boundaries of what is possible and creating work that is innovative and enjoyable.

We have put together a list of female musicians we think you should watch over the next year as they are going to make a big splash.

Read up on why we think you should follow these artists and sample some of their work.

rapsody

Rapsody

Rapsody has been grinding for a while and she is one of hip-hop’s best kept secrets. Many might now her from a cameo, she made on Kendrick Lamar’s To pimp a butterfly. The fact that she is the only rapper featured on the iconic record should tell you something about her skills. But it’s on her solo cuts that Rapsody really shines. She can spit bars and sing which often has had her compared to Lauryn Hill. But what makes Rapsody unique is her flow and when she is on a 9th Wonder beat she causes havoc. Peep the technique below.

Seinabo sey

Seinabo Sey

Seibano is the antithesis of what you expect from a Swedish singer-songwriter. She is young, modern and black. Her uptempo jams as well as her slow records just work and it’s no wonder they have been used on shows like Bones and New Girl and a whole variety of commercials. But don’t get it twisted Seinabo is not just a throw away pop musician she has some amazing one liners that somehow work as a part of a cohesive verse.

Bonj Mpanza

Bonj Mpanza

Bonja Mpanza’s voice will grab you immediately the first time you hear it. Her music has a spacey pop sound and is very layered. We love the sci-fi direction she took on tracks like Sunwalker and Through air and we are hoping to hear more of her jams come 2016.

Nonku Phiri

Nonku Phiri

You might have gotten familiar with Nonku from her work with Card on spokes and OkMalumKoolKat on a jam called On the low. Nonku’s got  a very sensual voice yet she has a low maintenance girl-next-door sound that just makes you want to listen to her for hours on end. Unfortunately despite a slew of singles, Nonku is yet to put out a full on project. There have been rumours but so far she is pulling a Frank Ocean on us. We want Nonku to release more music plain and simple.

moonchild

Moonchild

Moonchild is a pop enigma. What makes her standout is that she is a great performer and probably one of the most underrated live acts in South Africa today. She is unapologetic about her sexuality and this already puts her in a completely new space in the market but also she is a damn good singer. We particularly like how she mixes Xhosa and English lyrics in her music.

nao

Nao

Nao is difficult to box in. Specifically because she moves between upbeat house jams and slow pop burners. Her voice which has a falsetto tinge to it, makes listening to her across genres quite refreshing. The British vocalist has been slowly building a name for herself with a series of singles that have seen both her catalogue and fanbase grow. She is definitely one to look out for in the year ahead.

sza

SZA

We first heard of SZA a few years ago when she got some buzz from her mixtapes with standout tracks like Aftermath. When she signed to TDE our initial thoughts on her being a mad talent were confirmed. She has a humming sound that is still very smooth. What makes her standout however is her song writing. She has the ability to use cultural references in the most mesmerizing way possible. Listen to her verse about Ken dolls and Mortal Kombat below and you will know exactly what we mean.
