Investing is gas appliances like a gas stove or oven can set you back a lot of money, so it makes sense that maintenance should be top your priority.

Cleaning your appliances will go a long way in ensuring they stay in tip-top condition.

Before cleaning your gas appliances, make sure you carefully read you manual or appliance guide for do’s and don’ts regarding care.

Gas Stove

Most gas stoves are made with stainless steel, while some come with glass tops - which makes them easy to wipe clean. Gas stove grates can also be removed for better cleaning. All you need to do is soak them in some hot soapy water. Use a washcloth or a soft brush to clean your grates. You can also use a warm washcloth to gently wipe your burner covers. Make sure your grates and covers are completely dry before placing them back on your stove. You can also use vinegar and baking soda for tough stains. Watch the video below for tips.

Gas Oven

Cake batter and oils from oven cooked chicken can easily build up in your gas stove. This is something you want to avoid at all costs and the buildup could eventually cause your oven to smoke up. Start off by removing the racks form your gas oven. This will allow you to easily clean the entire surface of your oven. Use a baking soda and water solution (1 cup each) to scrub the inside of your oven. Allow the mixture to soak overnight (up to 12 hours). Pour vinegar into a spray bottle and spray the solution all over the inside of your oven, while using a damp cloth to wipe it clean.

Keep your packaging

Don’t throw away the packaging of small or moveable gas appliances like gas heaters and gas braais. Because you are likely to only use these from time to time, you will need the packaging to keep them clean and dust free while they are stored away. Dust can cause the jets (supplies gas to the burner) in some gas appliances to stop working properly if they become clogged. You can seal the box with some tape to prevent the flaps from lifting/opening.

If your appliances need to be repaired, it’s best to let a qualified technician look at them.
